Pluto Is A Planet!

Screw the new age scientists…Pluto is a planet! even if 2.5% of them believe it isn’t. Can I get an amen!

With depravity I break laws of gravity
Blast past the atmosphere to the last frontier
I go boldly through space and time
The sky's the limit but they're limiting the sky
I break orbit by habit
I ignite satellites and leave rings round the planets
A flying ace like that beagle
Nevertheless this alien remains illegal
'Cause their discovery dont cover me
The immigrant's been left in the cold to grow old and disintegrate
Discriminate against the distant and disclaim this
'Cause their small minds can't see past Uranus
But I shun their rays
'Cause stun's just a phase
And my odyssey runs in two-thousand and one ways
And I can see clearly now like Hubble
Shoved off the shuttle here's my rebuttal

It's a planet.

Who do you represent?
I represent the smallest planet
Attorney in this tourney versus those who tried to ban it
If you don't agree go see interplanet Janet
Cause sun is star like Pluto is planet
So lend me all ears and let me state my case
about all the types of satellites we must embrace
Cause like my parents' great grandparents - this planet is an immigrant,
to deport its an offense
It's an upstanding member of the solar system
Apply the laws of Earth and make it a victim
Of Proposition 187
If Pluto spawns a moon, it will apply to the heavens.
I'll damn you like Judas of Iscariot
If you demote this mote remote to affiliate
It's like taking ET's custody from Elliot
Support your Lilliput, 'cause simply put

Pluto is a planet

Do it for the children
(If not for yourselves)
Pluto is a planet

Umm…Drop!

Last night was a really good Wednesday night ride.  We started off a few minutes late as usual, but hey, somebody had to get ice for the cooler.  This week I led the group (same 6 as last week) on the loop in reverse.  The loop in reverse tends to be more hilly.  You lose some of the bomber downhills and replace them with longer climbs, but you are rewarded with a few downhills you usually don’t even think about when climbing in the opposite direction.  It’s an easy way to make an old loop new and fresh again.  Plus you end with the triple hill at the end to give you a nice burn before cracking open some cold beverages.

We ended right around 8:00 PM and the lack of light was pretty noticeable in the woods.  Riding in reverse has the advantage of it being easier to navigate a slightly wider trail and ride up hill at the end rather than finishing on up and down, rooty, and rocky singletrack, which is a benefit if you finish in the dark and didn’t bring a light.  It won’t be long now before we’ll have to start at 6:00 PM, but I’ve made the first step in trying to get legal night riding in the park.  MORE has already been through these negotiations once for night riding at Wakefield.  I should be able to leverage that experience and documentation to work the proper channels for Lake Fairfax…fingers crossed.

After the ride, we hung out with the Pedalshop crew, sipped on some Pumpkin Ale and reminisced about a few of our crazy TNS rides.  Also looks like we might have a few more players for Bootleggers Bliss.  What’s that you say?  Sound interesting?  Details to come soon, but keep November open and start brewing yourself some beer…

Vacation is officially OVER

Vacation has come and gone. We had a blast putting something like 1500 miles or so on the car doing a tour of our east coast friends and family, from VA to MD to ME to MA to RI and back home. Got a couple of short bike rides in while up in Maine, but nothing much, the weather was so nice we ended up hanging out on the beach most of the day. Managed to get in a tour of Shipyard Brewing…twice…and then a tour of Allagash Brewing. The beers were good and the brewing operations were quite different, but both were awesome. Pipe dream…maybe…

We knew vacation was over when we got the pleasure of extending the trip home by 3 hours due to heavy stop and go traffic from RI all the way through NJ. A rude awakening coming from the “heavy” ME traffic. Got home and managed to put on the Wednesday night ride at Colt’s Neck for those that were missing it. Then flew out on Friday back up to MA, specifically the Berkshires for a friends wedding. Non stop action all weekend and then right back to work. Looking forward to leading the Wednesday night ride this week. Went out last night and stretched the legs on the fixie over to Whole Foods to check out their Pumpkin Ale selection. Seems only Smuttynose has theirs on the shelf, but I did notice Old Dominion already has their Oktoberfest on the shelves. Grabbed a sixer of the Pumpkin, a new Weyerbacher triple IPA, and Yeti Imperial Stout (the non oaked version). Now I’ve got something to share tonight after the ride.

Oh, so my latest brewing adventure is about to begin. I’ve been asked to brew up around 20 gallons of my IPA for a friends wedding reception and we’ve got around 3 weeks to go before the date. This means I need to get on the ball since I do 5 gallon batches…that’s 4 brewing sessions for all you math majors, although I might tweak the recipe a little to see if I can do two super strong batches and water them down to a regular batch. Should have done all this a little earlier, but time has been crunched lately.

This weekend is also Kristin’s and my 1 year Anniversary and being the great wife she is I’m racing the final Cranky Monkey the morning of our anniversary out at the Quantico Marine Base…which makes sense if you remember I races the Single Speed World Championships the weekend before my wedding.  DFL in the Worlds…wonder if there will be a repeat this weekend?

Bust it…

Two weeks, two rides…three races.  Sometimes it’s like that (what) and thats the way it is.  A couple weeks ago I raced W@W #2 (DFL), then my next time on the bike I did a Monday night ride with Steve and Gary out at Colt’s Neck.  The trails looked good, the dirt was dry, and all of us were out of shape.  Then I raced W@W #3 (just eeked out in front of somebody in the last couple of minutes).  The course was shorter and backwards this race, but it felt harder, like there was more uphill.  I think it was simply that the course is almost always run the other way, so the little nuances of the trail are smoothed in, whereas when reversed everything is a little more bumpy and maybe theres just a little more of the slight uphills instead of slight downhills…who knows.  Shift to last weekend and I rode again with Steve and Gary, but this time we headed out to Rosaryville to check out the loop.  It’s fast, flowy, and if you ride fast enough in 100 degree heat it WILL put a hurting on you.  It was a nice day to ride and a great trail.  I managed to get a flat on the second half of the trail, but a little patch and we we’re off.  Got the bike nice and dusty for Sunday’s EX2 Cranky Monkey race.  Decided to race Sport since it was earlier in the day, so less hot and more time to go see Pirates 2.

Cranky Monkey course at Wakefield was pretty bomber.  It utilized the whole park, from the bowl, to salamander, to creek trail, to new stuff, to gravel roads.  All together it came out to about a 6 mile lap.  I averaged 9 mph and finished in just under 2 hours for a 67th out of 96.  Too bad I’ll be missing the next two Cranky races while I’m on vacation. Mmm…vacation…Ocean City, Maine, and Boston…the east coast extravaganza - have wife, dog, bike and beer…will travel.  Things I’m looking forward to: crabs with Old Bay, lobster rolls (the real kind, no mayo, just butter and maybe a little paprika in a New England style bun), any fried seafood from Huets, and Shipyard Brewing.

And I’m out!
