I’ve been off the bike now for around 2 weeks from the injury I received to my shoulder. It still hurts, but I have most of my movement back. Lifting things really hurts, especially if it’s higher than my head. So other than sitting around and getting fat, I’ve been doing some more brewing. Brewed up another batch of Hop Dog IPA and have all the ingredients I need to brew the same beer, but go for a little more malty base…something I’ve been consistently marked down for in competitions. Speaking of competitions, I thought I’d throw out a list of competitions I’ve entered and how I did:
- BURPs April Extract Competition - 1st place
- WortHogs April Extract Competition - 3rd place (says Derek Terrell as I just put DT down for name)
- AHA National Homebrew Competition First Round - 3rd place in East Region, Category 29: New Entrant
- BURPs Spirit of Free Beer Competition - 2nd place in Category IPA and Honorable Mention for the Bill Moe Award
I also entered my Imperial Stout into the Spirit of Free Beer, but I didn’t place in the Imperial Stout category. Lot’s of competition out there and it’s still really young for an imperial. I’m going to hold onto a bunch of it for the Fall season. My bASS ale clone went over really well. I call it Mary Quite Contrary Pale Ale since it was made specifically for a Mary and that’s all I could come up with for a name. Except for what I gave her, it’s all gone. Being a british pale ale it was an smooth drinking beer, not to mention having it on tap in the fridge in 3 liter bottles makes so easy to just pour a pint or two. I’m sure I’ll be brewing it again. Since I’m such a big fan of IPAs though, I’ll be sure from now on to brew an IPA every few batches so I always have some on hand. I’ve only got one bottle of Hop Dog IPA left and barely any Reparations Stout left if I hide it away for Fall. At least the Double Nut Brown Ale (gotta think of a name for this one) should be ready to drink this week. I think Whole Foods in Falls Church is probably seeing a dip in their beer sales and wondering what the hell happened!
So if anyone wants to see what it’s like to brew beer, let me know. My next batch of IPA will be going in the turkey fryer soon…

I’m so proud of you!
well….
what happened to your shoulder?
